The San Juan Public Lands
encompass some 2.5 million acres managed by the
Forest Service and Bureau of
Land Management, stretching across five Colorado counties in
the southwestern corner of the state. This terrain
ranges from high-desert
mesas to alpine peaks, with thousands of miles of back roads and hundreds of
miles of
trails to explore. These federal lands are managed for multiple
uses; visitors are asked to respect each other
and the natural resources. |

Mesa Verde National Park
in Southwest Colorado is the nation’s
largest archaeological preserve and features
4,000 known archaeological sites, including 600 cliff
dwellings. To fully experience the heritage and enjoy
the sights, allow one
to two days at the Park. The park is open 365 days a year. The Lodge and
campground
are open from mid-April to late October, and this is also when
most guided tours are available. Most cliff
dwellings and mesa-top sites are
visible year-round from the park's roads. |

Canyons of the Ancients
National Monument (CANM) in southwestern Colorado contains a huge
number
of archaeological sites-- more than 6,000 recorded so far, and up to
100 per square mile in some places--
representing Ancestral Puebloan and
other Native American cultures. CANM is managed as an integral cultural
landscape containing a wealth of historic and environmental resources. Auto
routes through CANM are few;
most roads are unpaved and rough. Most of
archaeological sites in this "outdoor museum" are not apparent
to the
untrained eye and precise locations are not publicized. This is a place to
explore on your own. |

An Unmatched Destination. Historic buildings, quaint bakeries and local watering
holes blend with luxury hotels,
world-class restaurants, sophisticated shops
and spas. There’s no traffic or long lines for shuttle buses, and in
most
cases no driving after you’ve arrived, as Telluride’s free gondola is the
main source of transportation. |
